9 Mixed Martial Arts Fighters Who Failed to Live Up to Hype

Today, we will look at nine fighters who failed to live up to said hype and why.

9. David Terrell

Seeing a future star in David Terrell, the UFC put him against Evan Tanner for the middleweight title. After losing to Tanner that, Terrell developed an injury bug and only fought once since the loss in 2006. Terrell has yet to fight in nearly four years, a sign that his MMA career is done.

8.Enson Inoue in PRIDE

Enson was invited to fight in PRIDE and 町田 ダンススクール was instantly put up against four of the top heavyweights in MMA: Mark Kerr, Igor Vovchanchyn, Heath Herring, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria. He failed to beat of of the top guys which put an end to his active career.

7. Stefan Leko In Pride

Leko looked clueless in his 3 fights with Pride as smaller fighters took him down and submitted him with ease like Naoya Ogawa. He has since gone back to K-1 and never fought in MMA again.

6. Mark Hunt’s Return to K-1

Mark Hunt did not fight for over a year and signed a huge deal to return to K-1. He looking horrible against Semmy Schilt and then he Hunt returned to MMA and lost three fights to Alistair Overeen (submitted him in minutes), Melvin Manhoef (broke the unbreakable chin), and Gegard Mousasi.

5. Masaaki Satake in PRIDE

Masaaki Satake came into PRIDE with a lot of hype and threw him straight against Mark Coleman. Coleman took him to the ground submitted him in one minute. After losses to Guy Mezger, Naoya Ogawa, and Igor, PRIDE dropped the K-1 star.

4. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou’s hype started after he knocked out Antonio Rogerio Nogueria and Ricardo Arona. Sokoudjou signed with the UFC and debuted against Lyoto Machida who took him down and choked him out in the second round. Sokoudjou than fought Luiz Cane and he soon gassed out in the first round.

He then signed with Affliction to face Babalu and once again gassed out in the second round and was choked out. Rameau then fought Gegard Mousasi and gassed out. He then lost to the much smaller Minowa at Dream and his career is basically done.

3. Mirko Cro Cop in the UFC

After beating Eddie Sanchez, Cro Cop was put up against Gabriel Gonzaga who brutally KO’ed Cro Cop. He then fought Cheick Kongo and lost a one sided decision. He then fought Junior Dos Santos, who picked Cro Cop apart for three rounds before Cro Cop quit.

2. Tim Sylvia in Affliction

The fight with Fedor at Affliction was a 36 second beat down, Sylvia than took an fight against 47-year old boxer Ray Mercer and was then knocked out in brutal fashion after coming into the fight out-of-shape.

1. Akebono

K-1 saw a potential in the sumo legend. After losing to Sapp, Akebono went 1-12 in kickboxing and MMA with loses to Royce Graice, Don Frye, Remy Bonjasky, and Hong Man Choi.
