Just recently, Facebook launched its new News Feed feature much to the delight of millions of users worldwide. This new feature shows more Pages updates to the users even if they haven’t followed such Pages. Thus, don’t be surprised if your own news feed displays Pages updates you haven’t actually liked that has something to do with other Pages that you really liked.
For instance, if you have liked Dwight Howard on Facebook, you might be able to view an update from Bleacher Report if they have tagged him on their post. Facebook has noted in their announcement that it already happened with updates from friends. The popular social media site have tested the feature for Pages before its launching and they’ve got favorable response from the users with this kind of content.
Andrew Song, Facebook product manager, said that they made sure only the most relevant stories will appear in News Feed. This includes posts that get the most engagement such as comments, likes, shares, and clicks. He further stated that they have given consideration on posts that are actually getting the most engagement from Facebook users who liked both the Page that made the post and the Page that was tagged.
In the example above, if there are many users who liked karlsruhe both Dwight Howard and the Bleacher Report, it clearly suggests that these Pages are connected. If there are many people who both liked the two Pages and liked the above sample post, it only shows that it has relevance to the people who only liked Dwight Howard. This means that some Page posts that tagged other Pages may be viewed by new people.
Facebook views this new feature another platform for people to find out more conversations about some topics that they may have an interest too. Last January, Facebook launched the new “Trending” feature which has similarity to some extent with the News Feed feature. Trending feature was designed to surface exciting and relevant conversations to help the Facebook users discover nothing but the best content across Facebook.
Trending topics are not really that intrusive as they’re supposed to be, compared to the News Feed. Right now, Page Admins are still observing how this recent changes will affect the Pages that they are managing. This is just one example of how Facebook updates its algorithms to make the most out of their features while trying to encourage user engagement. This is business after all. But as to the probability of achieving both goals, that remains to be seen.
